DIY ACV Cough Syrup For Adults
I had this nagging cough the other day and couldn’t sleep all night even after using some of my favorite cough remedies, I was up till dawn! The next day I went on Pinterest and found this DIY ACV cough syrup for adults recipe which I tried after making some alterations.
Thankfully, I was able to get a good night rest and most of my symptoms disappeared. So as always, I’ve decided to share this recipe to help with your cough symptoms. But before you get the recipe, here are some common causes of cough and when to see a doctor worth knowing.
Causes Of Cough
Allergies – symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, swelling around the lips, mouth, or throat, and coughing that comes with itching in the throat. Allergy related cough usually goes away after taking allergy medication.
Asthma – symptoms includes tightness in chest, wheezing, breathlessness, and a cough that may or may not bring up mucus. This type of cough usually goes away when its treated with asthma medication.
Virus Infection – symptoms include fever, chills, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, and body aches. A lot of times the symptoms last for maybe three days to a week and then slowly get better over time.
Getting a lot of rest, drinking enough fluids like soup and hot tea along with the following cough remedy will help relieve symptoms.
Common clod & flu – symptoms both include cough but both are different, a flu related cough is usually dry and does not cause mucus production while a cough caused by cold can be productive.
To treat your symptoms, use the remedy below, get enough rest, a lot of liquids, drink some warm chicken soup and get some saline nasal spray.
Bacterial Infection – symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, discolored mucus output when coughing, fever, chills, and body ache. With bacterial infections, you will need antibiotics.
When to see a doctor : Not all cough can be cured with home remedies so if you experience a persistent cough that comes with fever, chills, pain in your chest, shortage of breath, red or pink mucus, rush to the emergency room right away.
DIY ACV Cough Syrup For Adults
Ingredients | Total time: 2 minutes
- 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of bourbon
- 4 tablespoons raw honey
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Preparation & Consumption:
Mix all of the ingredients above and take 1 to 2 tsp every 2 to 3 hours as needed to help control cough and soothe sore throat.
Storage
Store with a lid on for a week in the fridge.
How This DIY ACV Cough Syrup Works
Apple Cider Vinegar – helps thin out mucus and makes it easier to expel. Also, ACV also contains antibacterial and antifungal properties and may help get rid of some throat lingering viruses.
Raw honey – helps reduce the urge to cough by coating and soothing the throat. It also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties which reduces swelling and infection in the throat lining.
Bourbon – is hot so it may help fight off some of those viruses but it mostly acts as a preservative in this remedy to give it a longer shelf life.
Cinnamon – thins out mucus and may act as an expectorant, making it easier to cough up mucus and clear your airways. It also contains compounds that help open up airways and relieve shortness of breath.
Ginger – is one of the most popular natural home remedies for cough and sore throat. The active compound in ginger that helps soothe cough is gingerol, which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It also helps relax the airways and reduce irritation.
